Remembering Marcella

A life held close in memory

Marcella “Marci” Cheri Bachmann was a 16-year-old girl from Vancouver, Washington, whose life—though cut tragically short—was never anonymous to the people who knew her as Marci or the name she sometimes used, Robin. In 1984 she left home and traveled to Montana; friends and later investigators reported that she had been living around Missoula and was taken in by a local man. Those who remember her recall a young person trying to find a place to belong during a difficult time.

For more than two decades her identity was unknown to investigators and community members; she was referred to by the place where her remains were found. That anonymity ended in 2006 when modern DNA testing at the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification allowed her to be positively identified as Marcella Bachmann. The identification returned a name to a life and gave her family and community the chance to grieve a daughter and a sister by name.

Although public records about Marcella’s earlier childhood and personal interests are limited in the available sources, what is clear is that she was a young person navigating the challenges of adolescence away from home. The effort to restore her name reflects the care of detectives, forensic scientists, and family members who continued searching for answers long after 1984. Her remains were later cremated and interred, and her identification brought a measure of closure to a story that had been told in fragments for years.

Marcella’s story is a reminder of the humanity behind every missing-person report: a real teenager with a name, family ties, and people who wanted to know what happened to her. Remembering Marcella means acknowledging her life first — a person who deserved to be known — and the years it took for her name to be returned to public record.
