Remembering Malik
A life held close in memory
Malik Xavier Miller (June 2, 1990 – October 2, 2020) is remembered for the joy he brought to those closest to him. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Malik valued family above all else and took pride in caring for the people he loved. He completed his schooling with the Wilmington public schools and is listed as a graduate of James Grooves.
Malik’s faith and community ties were important to him; he was known as a faithful member of Masjid AR Razzaaq. He loved music and often expressed himself through rapping — friends say he could turn any moment into a playful performance. Malik enjoyed traveling when he could, spending time with family and friends, and had a quick sense of humor that made people laugh.
He is survived by his fiancée Derkeya Rogers, his son Nasir Miller and a child expected to be named Jaliah Miller, his parents Susan Matthews (Donnie Rudolph) and Gilbert Matthews (stepmother Carmen Matthews), numerous siblings and extended family members, and close friends who treasured his presence. He was preceded in death by grandparents Sarah Terrell, Charles Miller and Gilbert C. Matthews Sr., and a close friend Kevin Washington.
Those who loved Malik remember a caring, lively man who centered his life on family and community. His memory endures in the laughter he shared, the music he loved, and the devotion he showed to his son and partner.
