Makiel Swift

Makiel “Mikey” Swift (January 21, 1975 – September 25, 2015) was remembered for his steady presence, his love for family, and the everyday kindnesses he offered to those around him. Born in Saginaw to Anderson Sr. and Ruth Swift, Makiel spent his early childhood in the city before his family relocated to Oakland, California. There he completed his schooling, graduating from McClymonds High School in 1994 and continuing his studies at Contra Costa Community College, where he contributed on both the football and track teams.

Those who knew Mikey remember a man comfortable both in the kitchen and behind the barber chair. He worked as a cook at Magic Kitchen and used his barbering skills to help friends and neighbors look their best. He brought the same care and quiet pride to his work that he brought to family gatherings and community moments.

Family was at the center of Makiel’s life. He is survived by his children, Sabree Swift, Makiel Swift Jr., and Troy Swift, as well as his father Anderson (Jean) Swift Sr.; sister Sharon Winnie Swift; brothers Bobby (Euretha) Brandon, Phillip (Tiffany) Evans, and Anderson Swift Jr.; and an extended circle of grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends across Michigan and California. The obituary published by Paradise Funeral Chapel noted the many relatives and friends who cherished him and the gratitude his family expressed for the support they received during their bereavement.

Makiel’s life was one of simple, familiar commitments — to his children, to his craft, and to the people he considered family. His presence at neighborhood barbershops, around the dinner table, and on the playing field left a quiet mark on those who knew him. He was honored at services at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Saginaw, where friends and family gathered to celebrate his life and memory. In remembering Mikey, loved ones recall a man whose everyday acts of care and skill reflected a deeper devotion to the people he loved.
