Their life, in the words of those who remember
The story of Louis Baker Cochran
Louis “Baker” Cochran (born August 22, 1941) made his life in the small community around Jackson and Aiken, South Carolina. Known locally as “Baker,” he combined a career in engineering with work supporting young people: he earned a bachelor’s degree, retired as a civil engineer, and spent time teaching in the Aiken County public school system. In later years he also worked at Lowe’s in Aiken.
Baker shared a deep affection for animals, especially horses, and with his wife Sandra kept and cared for horses on their Jackson property. Neighbors and friends remember the Cochrans for their quiet, steady presence — decorating for the holidays, tending animals, and helping where needed. Baker and Sandra were active in their local church community at Green Pond Baptist Church and enjoyed historical interests together; Sandra was noted for her interest in historic organizations and reenactments.
The couple raised two daughters, and their family life included grandchildren who were an important part of their daily world. In December 2015 the community gathered to honor Baker and Sandra with a joint memorial service; the family asked that memorial contributions be directed to causes that reflected their care for animals, including the Equine Rescue of Aiken.
Public records and contemporaneous local reporting make clear that Baker’s life was centered on family, service, and a steady devotion to the animals and neighbors around him. While the circumstances of his death remain part of the public record, it is Baker’s years of teaching, quiet helpfulness, and care for the animals on his farm that friends and family recall most warmly.
