Their life, in the words of those who remember

The story of Lawrence Boyd IV

Lawrence Holdridge “Larry” Boyd IV lived with an easy sense of purpose and a genuine fondness for the outdoors. Born July 2, 1993, he grew up with an appreciation for active, hands-on life — kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and time outside were among the things that grounded him. His academic path led from Traverse City West High School to studies at Northwestern Michigan College and on to Ferris State University, where he completed a degree in criminal justice.

Friends and family remember Larry as someone who cared about his community and worked steadily to serve it. He held roles as a teacher earlier in his life and was most recently employed by the City of Traverse City’s Parking Services department. Colleagues described him as dependable and calm under pressure, qualities that complemented his steady demeanor and practical skills.

Away from work, Larry’s interests included cheering for the Detroit Lions, staying active at the gym, playing video games with friends, and showing kindness toward children and animals. Those who knew him recall his ready laugh, his willingness to help, and how he found contentment in simple, outdoor pursuits.

Larry was part of a close-knit family and is survived by his parents, Lawrence Boyd III and Kristina Hooper, a stepmother, and extended family members who remember him with affection. His life touched many in the Traverse City area — neighbors, co‑workers, classmates and a wide circle of friends.

On the morning of November 16, 2025, the community learned that Larry had been fatally shot while at work. His loss was felt immediately across Traverse City; in the months after his death the city and local organizations marked his memory, including a permanent memorial unveiled in his honor. While the circumstances of his death have been part of public record, what endures in the memories of those who loved him are the quieter, everyday parts of his life: his love of the outdoors, his dedication to service, and the dependable presence he offered to others.

For those who wish to honor his memory, the family indicated contributions to Project Feed the Kids and the Cherryland Humane Society, reflecting causes that echoed Larry’s care for community and animals. He is remembered not for how he died, but for the steady, compassionate life he led and the small acts of kindness that defined him.
