Remembering Latoya

A life held close in memory

LaToya Marie (Watson) Smith, born June 24, 1991, in Craven County, North Carolina, was a devoted mother, cherished daughter, and a bright presence to all who knew her. She carried a quiet strength rooted in faith and family that guided her through life’s joys and challenges. LaToya treasured her children — Janiya, Ross Jr., and Raziyah — and was a loving stepmother to Janquia. Her family remembers her for the everyday ways she showed care: moments of encouragement, shared laughter, and steady commitment to those she loved.

LaToya was surrounded by a close circle of relatives who meant the world to her: her mother, Rose Lawhorn; her father, Darnell Watson; grandparents and extended family across the region; and siblings who stood with her through life’s seasons. Her ties to the Ft. Barnwell and Kinston communities were meaningful, and she is remembered by neighbors and friends who recall her warmth and presence.

A celebration of LaToya’s life was held on May 19, 2025, at Trinity Funeral Service in Kinston, followed by burial at the Harris Family Cemetery in Ft. Barnwell. Those who loved her honored her memory with prayer, remembrance, and the company of family. In the face of profound loss, her family asked for continued prayers and support as they cherish the legacy she leaves in the lives of her children and loved ones.

LaToya’s life mattered deeply to those who knew her. She is remembered not for how her life ended but for the love she gave, the family she raised, and the small everyday kindnesses that left a lasting impression. May her memory be a blessing to her children, family, and everyone who held her dear.
