Remembering Kim

A life held close in memory

Kim Saltmarsh Dietz was known to family, friends and coworkers as a warm, steady presence who loved the outdoors and cared for animals. In the years before her death she lived near Roseburg, Oregon, and worked for many years as a caretaker at Pyrenees Vineyard in the Myrtle Creek area, a role that reflected her deep appreciation for nature and the land. Reports from those who knew her describe a woman who embraced life simply and practically: she enjoyed spending time outdoors and was devoted to her family, especially her daughter.

Inspired by her daughter, Kim returned to school as an adult student at Umpqua Community College to continue learning and to support a shared journey of education with her child. That decision—to study alongside her daughter—was a source of pride for those who knew her and illustrated Kim’s commitment to growth and family bonds.

Friends and community members remembered Kim as a protective, nurturing person. After her death, memorial gatherings were held close to the places where she lived and worked; colleagues at the vineyard and neighbors came together to honor her memory. Local coverage and community memorials highlighted both her longtime ties to the Pyrenees Vineyard where she and her husband worked and her roots in Southern California; classmates and former neighbors in Orange County recalled her as someone who had long valued family and community.

Kim’s life was more than the tragic way it ended. She was a daughter, a mother who returned to education to walk a path with her child, a caregiver at a vineyard who loved being outdoors, and a friend to the people in her small Oregon community. Those facets of her life—her devotion to family, her connection to the land, and her quiet courage—are how many who knew her choose to remember her today.
