Remembering Kenneth
A life held close in memory
Kenneth “Kim” Charles Daves (known to many simply as Kim) was a hardworking husband, father, grandfather and small-business owner whose life was rooted in county life and service to his neighbors. For more than two decades he and his family operated K&M Grocery, where his friendly presence and steady work were part of the rhythm of the community. Kim also raised cattle and worked at the Winona Stockyard, sustaining a life shaped by the land, honest labor, and the practical care he showed for those around him.
A graduate of Carroll Academy (1981) and Holmes Community College (1983), Kim balanced the responsibilities of farming and business with a devotion to family. He was a founding member of local clubs including the Black Hawk Hunting Club and the Black Hawk Country Club, and he took pride in being a dependable neighbor who helped others when they needed it.
Kim is remembered by his wife, Mary Lou Daves, and by his children Jessica Cortez (Gage), Lee Daves, Ken Daves and Amy Daves, and by his grandchildren. He was also survived by siblings and extended family who recall him as honest, hardworking, and committed to his family and community. Those who knew him remember his practical kindness, his loyalty to family, and the steady presence he provided in everyday life.
Friends and family honored Kim’s life with services held at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home, followed by burial at Black Hawk Methodist Church Cemetery. His family asked that memories of his generosity, strong work ethic, and devotion to family be the legacy he leaves behind.
