A formal remembrance
Karen Barker Swanson Yee, 48, of Penhook, Virginia, passed away on February 18, 2013. A devoted daughter, sister, wife and friend, Karen was known for her quiet kindness, steady faith, and deep commitment to the Smith Mountain Lake community.
Born to Samuel W. Swanson, Jr. and Alice Lively (by marriage), Karen grew into a person who greeted everyone with a friendly smile and a compassionate heart. She and her husband, Dr. Kim Yee, shared 17 years of marriage and the daily life of co‑owning the Penhook Boat Dock — a place that kept them connected to the lake and to neighbors and visitors alike.
Faith and service were central to Karen’s life. She was an active member of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church and participated in local organizations, including the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce. Her concern for the natural beauty of the area led her to support environmental causes, and she gave time and energy to groups working to protect the lake and its surroundings.
Karen’s love for animals was well known in the region. She served on the Danville Humane Society Board of Directors, advocating for the care and well‑being of companion animals and encouraging others to show compassion through rescue and adoption.
Family was important to Karen. She is survived by her mother, Alice Lively and her husband Bob Lively of Penhook; her father, Samuel W. Swanson, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Ringgold; her brother Stephen Swanson and his family of Burlington, North Carolina; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who remember her generous spirit. Friends and neighbors recall Karen’s helpfulness, her thoughtful conversations, and the ease with which she made others feel seen.
Funeral arrangements were announced locally with services held to honor Karen’s life and faith. Those who knew her remember not only her community involvement and advocacy, but the simple, human gifts she offered every day — a listening ear, a warm greeting, and a devotion to causes she believed in.
Karen’s life left an imprint on the Smith Mountain Lake community through steady service, love for animals, and her commitment to family and faith. She will be remembered for her gentle presence and the many small acts of care that defined her life.
