Remembering Julissa

A life held close in memory

Julissa Mercedes Laslie was a caring daughter, sister, student and friend whose bright spirit and quiet determination were evident in everything she did. Born February 26, 2007, in Chicago, Julissa became a part of the Mount Vernon community while attending Casey Middle School and later Mount Vernon Township High School. She loved reading, listening to music and watching movies, and she enjoyed being active — running track and cross country, playing basketball, and performing on the violin in orchestra during her middle-school years.

Julissa was a hard worker who began employment at a young age and most recently worked at McDonald’s. She had clear goals for her future: she planned to graduate early and pursue a college education in business with the dream of one day operating her own business. Julissa also cherished simple adventures and hopes — she wanted to visit Florida, go camping, and someday try skydiving.

Family was central to Julissa’s life. She is remembered with love by her parents, Allen Laslie and Kathleen Hubler, and by her siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, nieces, nephews and cousins. Those who knew her speak of the gentle way she connected with people and the warmth she brought to ordinary days.

Julissa’s life ended far too soon on January 13, 2024, in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Her family invited the community to honor her memory with a visitation and funeral service at Newell Funeral Home, and they set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral arrangements. The outpouring of support reflected how many lives she touched in her short time.

Her family and friends remember Julissa for her bright smile, her plans for the future, and the love she gave to those around her. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed.
