Obituary
A formal remembrance
Jovan William “Smiley” Medley was a young man whose warmth and energy made an impression on everyone around him. Born on September 30, 2005, in Leonardtown, Maryland, Jovan carried a natural gift for brightening a room—his nickname reflected the smile he shared so freely. He loved basketball and spent many years playing with St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks, where teammates recall his dedication, teamwork, and genuine enthusiasm for the game.
Family was central to Jovan’s life. He treasured time with his parents, Joseph W. Medley III and Taneea Scriber, and with his extended family, who remember him for his kindness, humor, and the warmth he showed to those closest to him. Jovan also had a special bond with his dogs; he cared for and began breeding bullies, taking pride in their company and in the responsibility of tending to them. Those loyal companions were a vivid expression of his gentle, nurturing side.
Those who knew Jovan often spoke of his generous nature and ability to put others at ease. He leaves behind cherished memories with siblings, grandparents, great-grandmothers, and a close circle of friends who will remember his laughter and the small, steady ways he showed love. Though his life was far too short, the joy he shared, the family moments he treasured, and the kindness he offered remain as a lasting testament to who he was.
Services were arranged by Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., Leonardtown. In remembering Jovan, his family asks that people hold close the simple gifts he offered: a smile, a laugh, care for animals, and devotion to family. His spirit will continue to live on in those who loved him.
