Obituary
A formal remembrance
Joshua Jamar Carroll (born in the Washington, D.C. area) passed away on May 17, 2011. Remembered by family as gentle and soft-spoken, Joshua grew up in Southeast Washington and completed his education at Forestville Military Academy. He was baptized in 2005 and held a strong faith that mattered deeply to him and to those who loved him.
Family was central to Joshua’s life. He was devoted to his father, Charles Morse, and to the sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews who survive him. Those who knew him recall a young man who, despite early challenges and the loss of his mother, found ways to care for and cherish his family. He is also remembered by a wide circle of aunts, uncles and cousins who counted him as a beloved relative.
Joshua enjoyed simple, everyday pleasures. He worked at Pizza Hut and took pleasure in sports—particularly basketball and football—counting the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Cowboys among his favorite teams. Friends and family described him as peaceful and kind, a person whose warmth showed in smaller gestures and in his steady, calm presence.
Though Joshua’s life was cut short, those who loved him remember the quiet strengths he carried: loyalty to family, a sincere faith, and an easygoing kindness. His memory lives on in the stories his relatives share, the photos they keep, and the small rituals that keep a person near—a favorite song, a remembered joke, a family gathering that would have included him.
Services were handled by Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home (Mechanicsville). In lieu of flowers, the family invited expressions of remembrance through the funeral home’s arrangements. Joshua’s life, while brief, touched many; he is mourned and remembered by those who knew his gentle spirit.
