Remembering Joseph
A life held close in memory
Joseph Bernard Winstead (July 4, 1944 — June 6, 2023) lived a life rooted in family, faith, and community. Born in Vance County, Joseph made Durham his home and was a longtime, devoted member of St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church. Those who knew him remember a calm, reliable presence who kept close ties with family and his church community.
He was the son of Percy Winstead and Mary Eunice Jackson Winstead and is survived by his brother, Adrian L. Winstead, and several nieces and nephews who carry forward his memory. Joseph was preceded in death by siblings Brenda Ray, Emma Lou Woodard, Ellen Paynter, George Winstead, and Lawrence Winstead.
A memorial service celebrating his life was held on June 23, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church, where The Rev. Dr. Lauren Winner led family and friends in honoring his life and the relationships that mattered most to him. The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church to support the congregation that meant so much to him.
Though his circle was modest, Joseph’s life reflected a steady devotion to the people and places he loved. His connection to church and family provided the framework for a life of quiet faithfulness. Those who gathered to remember him recalled the comfort of his presence and the steady loyalty he offered to kin and neighbors.
Joseph’s passing is a reminder of the value of steady companionship and faith lived in everyday ways. He is remembered with gratitude by those who loved him and by a church community that welcomed him for many years.
