Obituary

A formal remembrance

John Deviase “Debo” Baker (October 11, 1982 – October 31, 2021) was a devoted son, loving father and a familiar presence in the Brownsville/Auburn community. Born in Macon County, Alabama, John grew up surrounded by the close family ties of the region. To those who called him “Debo” or “Punky,” he was a caring son to Ora Jean Baker and a steady presence in the lives of relatives and friends.

John is remembered foremost by his family: his mother, Ora Jean Baker of Auburn; his son, Jayceon D'Kari Baker of Dadeville; his brother Derrick Leon Caldwell (Shana) of Atlanta; and a wide circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces who loved him. Those who knew him recall a man whose relationships with family were central to his life and who left an impression on everyone he met.

A graveside service to celebrate John’s life was held on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Bethel No. 2 Missionary Baptist Church in Opelika, with Harris Funeral Home of Opelika assisting the family. Friends and relatives gathered to honor his memory and to support one another in their grief.

Though no list of hobbies or career highlights was included in the published notice, the memorial details and the turnout for his service speak to the connections John formed in his community and the deep regard his family and friends felt for him. His son, mother and siblings survive him and continue to carry his memory forward.

John’s life mattered to those who loved him. In remembering him, his family’s shared stories, the quiet ways he showed up for loved ones and the small daily acts of care are the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
