Obituary

A formal remembrance

Jessica Chandra Kirkland (May 2, 1989 – April 7, 2024) was a devoted mother, caring daughter, loving sister, and a bright presence in her community. As a single mother, Jessica placed her children at the center of her world, giving them steady support, affection, and the kind of everyday attention that builds strong family bonds. She celebrated family with hugs, playful nicknames and voice texts that kept loved ones close even when life was busy.

Professionally, Jessica brought energy and creativity to her work at Skyland Care Center, where she had recently stepped into the role of Activity Director. Her love of singing and natural enthusiasm helped create moments of comfort and joy for the residents she served; coworkers and those who knew her remember her for a warm personality and a willingness to bring music and life into the care setting. Jessica’s promotion reflected the faith others had in her leadership and her genuine care for people.

Jessica’s family—her children J.J. Kirkland and Drevaughn McVay-Kirkland, and her stepchildren Ja'Quan and Leila McVay—were among her greatest joys. She is also survived by her mother, Malinda Kirkland; step-father Roger Bigham; and sister Jennifer Wooten, along with nieces and nephews who remember her as a loving aunt. Jessica’s everyday devotion to family, and the small, steady ways she showed love, are the legacy her family will carry forward.

A celebration of Jessica’s life was held on April 28, 2024, at Appalachian Funeral Services in Sylva, where family and friends gathered to remember her voice, her laughter, and the kindness she brought into others’ lives. Those who knew Jessica remember a woman who shared her heart freely, who loved to sing, and who took pride in caring for others. In the midst of sorrow, her family and community honor the gentleness and light she shared.

Jessica will be remembered for her warmth, her devotion to her children, and the compassion she brought to her work. Her presence touched many, and her memory lives on in the family, friends, and residents who carry forward the comforts she gave so readily.
