Remembering Jerry

A life held close in memory

Jerry L. Harris of Bonham, Texas, passed away on June 4, 2024, at the age of 76. Born February 2, 1948, in Bonham to Leonard and Lela Harris, Jerry lived a life shaped by service, work, and family. After graduating from Bonham High School, he studied IBM computer programming and data processing before answering his country’s call: he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1969 and served a year in Quang Nam Province during the Vietnam War.

Following his military service, Jerry built a long career with the Texas & Pacific Railroad (later Union Pacific), where he worked for 26 years. He married Alicia Acree in 1968 and was the proud father of two daughters. Family meant everything to Jerry. He delighted in time spent with his daughter Alyssa, her husband Barry Wernick, and his three cherished granddaughters, who fondly called him “Grandpere.” He showed his love through steady, everyday gestures—cards, letters, and gifts marking birthdays and small milestones—and through the simple joy of shared music, stories, and outdoor outings.

Those who knew Jerry remember his warm, sincere outlook and gentle southern manner. In younger years he enjoyed running, tennis, amateur boxing, and swimming; even into his later decades he remained fond of outdoor activities and classic rock and soft rock music. He was active in his community as a member and officer of American Legion Post 283 in Bonham.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife Alicia and by his daughter Jennifer. He is survived by daughter Alyssa Wernick and husband Barry, granddaughters Betsy, Alice, and Libby Wernick, brothers Danny and Roger Harris, and sister Sandra Schneider. A family night was held Thursday, June 6 at Wise Funeral Home, and a graveside service including an American Legion Missing Man Ceremony took place Friday, June 7 at Lamasco Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to Friends of Bonham SNAP or American Legion Post 283.

Jerry’s life was marked by service, steadfast devotion to family, and a gentle generosity of spirit that those who loved him will long remember.
