Jerry Gibson

Jerry Gibson was born September 21, 1937, son of William (Bill) Gibson and Willie Maude Jones Gibson. He went to be with his Lord on December 8, 2016 when his life was tragically cut short. He is survived by his sisters Imogene Gay (Norwood) of Elkart, Indiana; Willie Jean Gwin of Mishawaka, Indiana; Thelma Kelley (Arvil) of Mountain Home, Arkansas; Glenda Fredericks of Tuscon, Arizona; Mary Lee Alberson of Ashland, Mississippi; and Diane Owen of Nixa, Missouri and his brother Alton DeWayne Gibson (Eloise) of Memphis, TN. He was preceded in death by his brothers Frank Gibson, W. R. Gibson, Lowell Gibson, and his sister June Renfrow.

Jerry Gibson grew up in Leachville, Arkansas and held great love for his hometown his entire life. He came to Memphis in the early 1960's after two years of service in the
U. S. Army. He became extremely knowledgeable about the music of the 50's and 60's. Jerry became an expert collector of pre-war blues, doo-wop, and rhythm and blues, specifically the music of Elvis Presley and those of that era. He was world renowned for his expertise in music of the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. People came from far and wide to visit his shop, RIver Records, some as far away as England, Germany, and Japan, and it was common for customers to become lifelong friends. All who knew Jerry recognized his winning smile, wholehearted laugh, and genuine friendliness. His emphasis in life was always on the good and positive.

Jerry was an avid sports fan, but he was a rabid Arkansas Razorbacks fan. He always looked forward with great anticipation to each Arkansas Razorbacks season whether the sport was football or basketball.

He was a wonderful and loving brother to his four brothers and seven sisters and an affectionate and doting uncle who played a formative role in the lives of his nieces and nephews. He served his country proudly, contributed to Memphis gladly, and loved all his family and friends devotedly.

The Gibson family is planning a memorial in Jerry's honor during the 3rd week of January for his friends and family to remember and celebrate his special life, with more specific details to come. It will be held at River Records where Jerry built his legacy, made countless friends, and lived.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that they keep Jerry's loved ones and friends in their prayers as we mourn his passing and celebrate his life.
