Obituary
A formal remembrance
Jaylan (often written Jaylen) Brock was a beloved 14-year-old student of Fremont Middle School who touched the lives of classmates, teachers, and family with his cheerful smile and warm spirit. Born May 14, 2003, in Staten Island, New York, Jaylan moved with his family to Fremont seeking a fresh start and quickly became part of the local youth community. He was active with the Triumph Foundation’s youth programs and enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
Jaylan’s family remembers him for his spontaneous joy and the way he could brighten a day with his presence. Great-aunt Victoria Bowling described him as “happy, smiley, joyful,” and relatives recall how his laugh and energy brought people together. At school he was in the eighth grade and known to teachers and peers as a friendly, well-liked student who cared about those around him.
Throughout his short life Jaylan made a meaningful impression on his community. Family members spoke of the hope they had for his future and the small everyday moments—shared smiles, family time, and youthful plans—that now live on in the memories of those who loved him. In the wake of his passing, relatives called for greater attention to safety and education for young people, seeking to honor his memory by preventing future tragedies.
Those who knew Jaylan remember a boy who loved to laugh and who carried himself with a warmth that made others feel seen. His family’s strength and the community’s support during their grief reflected how deeply Jaylan was loved. He is survived by his mother, Tania Darby, his father, Troy Brock, and extended family who cherish his memory. Services and remembrances held by the family celebrated the life of a son and nephew whose bright presence will be long remembered.
Jaylan’s life, though cut far too short, left an imprint on his family and community. He is remembered not for the manner of his death, but for the warmth and light he brought to those around him.
