Their life, in the words of those who remember
The story of Jawari Porter
Jawari Porter was a Cincinnati native who, in his earlier years, showed promise and opportunity. He graduated from Taft High School and earned a scholarship through the Higher Education Mentoring Initiative that brought him to the University of Cincinnati as a freshman in 2010. At that time he was recognized by mentors as a young person with potential and aspirations beyond the challenges he had faced.
Porter’s life included long-standing struggles with mental illness and unstable housing. Public records and reporting show he spent time in and out of foster care and later used services and addresses associated with local homeless support organizations. He also received inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment over several years. Community groups who knew him described him as someone who had been helped by mentoring programs and by local service organizations.
In the months before his death, Porter took steps to be involved with the community in small ways: he signed up to sell Streetvibes, a local paper distributed by people experiencing homelessness, and was connected with the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition. Friends and family quoted in contemporaneous reporting remembered him as kind and loved by people close to him, even as they expressed heartbreak about his difficulties and frustration that he had not received consistent care.
Porter’s life — from moments of promise at university to later struggles with mental health and housing instability — highlights the human costs when support systems falter. Those who knew him have used his memory to call for better mental health services and more effective, compassionate responses from communities and institutions. Though public documentation focuses in part on the circumstances at the end of his life, what remains important for a remembrance is that Jawari was a person who had relationships, earlier achievements, and the capacity for care. This page honors the fact that his life mattered beyond the public headlines and reflects the family’s wish that others in similar situations receive help and dignity.
