Javier Gutierrez

Javier Gutierrez was a young man rooted in his North Long Beach community. A student at Jordan High School and a member of a local youth peace group, he worked with peers to ease tensions between neighborhoods and to keep the focus on school, sports and everyday life that mattered to teenagers in the area.

Friends and classmates remember Javier for simply wanting to be part of ordinary activities—walking across an athletic field to watch a soccer game, taking part in school life, and being engaged in neighborhood efforts that aimed to reduce conflict. Those ties to school and community were the threads of a short life that mattered to family, friends and teachers.

Javier’s death on February 2, 1995, at age 17, had a deep effect on Long Beach. Community groups and local organizations later invoked his memory when building programs for young people at risk of violence. Centro CHA (formerly an active community organization in Long Beach) recognizes his name alongside other young leaders through a youth award that honors those who contribute positively to their neighborhoods, an indication of how his life became a touchstone for local efforts to support youth and prevent violence.

While public records about Javier’s personal history are limited, what is clear from contemporary and later community sources is that he was known as a young person who cared about improving relations in his neighborhood.
