Their life, in the words of those who remember
The story of Jashira Pagan
Jashira Pagan was born June 9, 1992, in Hartford and grew into a vibrant presence in the Norwich community. Family notices and funeral information describe her as charismatic, confident, and full of life — someone whose laugh drew people in and whose energy brightened gatherings. She loved animals deeply and was rarely seen apart from her beloved pit bull, XO; she also cared for a cat known as “mew mew.”
Her family remembered simple pleasures that mattered to her: time at the beach and an interest in many forms of art. Those who knew her spoke of a spirited personality that brought joy to those around her and a natural warmth that made her company welcome. Public memorial information lists her parents as Juan Pagan and Arisleida Lopez and identifies close family including stepparents and siblings; her family arranged a Mass of Christian Burial in Norwich and burial in Mystic.
In early November 2022 Jashira suffered a traumatic injury during an altercation outside a Norwich condominium complex and was hospitalized. Reports indicate she was initially shot on November 5 and later died from her injuries in the days that followed. While the circumstances of her death were investigated by police and later led to criminal charges, the central memory many shared in public notices and remembrances is of Jashira’s warmth, her love of animals, and the light she brought into family life.
Public records and funeral notices ask that remembrances honor her life; one published memorial suggested donations to the Connecticut Humane Society in her memory. Though the public record focuses in part on the events of November 2022, those who loved Jashira emphasized the person she was — a daughter, sister, and friend who took pleasure in animals, the shore, and moments of creativity. That life, and the small everyday things she cared for, remain what many choose to remember today.
