Their life, in the words of those who remember

The story of Jarrod Brent Shivers

Jarrod Brent Shivers (born March 30, 1973) served his community with steady devotion as both a United States Navy veteran and a Chesapeake police officer. After nearly eight years in the Navy, he continued a life of service by joining the Chesapeake Police Department in January 2000. Colleagues remember him as unassuming, steady, and dependable — a man who earned respect through quiet competence and commitment.

During his time with the department Shivers worked in patrol and later the Special Investigations Section. He completed SWAT training and served as a member of the SWAT team. His work earned him commendations, including recognition for efforts addressing auto theft, and he completed his bachelor’s degree from Saint Leo University in 2006. Those who knew him recall ordinary moments that revealed his priorities: he spoke of his children with a smile and regularly expressed love for his wife, Nicole.

Family was central to Jarrod’s life. He was a husband and the father of three children — Brittnie, Ashleigh and Landon — and friends and fellow officers frequently described how he would light up talking about them. At gatherings he could be found enjoying simple camaraderie with coworkers; one fellow officer remembered sharing sushi and hearing Jarrod say “I love you” to his wife more than once during that meal. His family and community were present in the public outpouring of respect after his death.

Jarrod’s loss in January 2008 was mourned widely across Chesapeake and the region. Hundreds attended his funeral procession and service, honoring both his public service and his private roles as husband and father. The Chesapeake community and his department have continued to remember him through memorials, awards named in his honor, and moments of silence at official events.

Though public records focus most heavily on his service and the circumstances of his death, they also show a man who chose service as a way of life and who cherished his family. This remembrance seeks to honor Jarrod Brent Shivers for the life he lived — as a sailor, an officer, a husband, and a father — and for the steady, personal commitments that defined him.
