Remembering Jarnell
A life held close in memory
Jarnell Lamont “Nelly” Carter was remembered for the brightness he carried into everyday moments and the deep love he held for his daughter. Born June 12, 2000, to Jennifer Compton and Jamarcus Carter, Jarnell was known among family and friends for a million-dollar smile and a playful, generous spirit. He took pride in his appearance, loved shopping for himself, and especially delighted in spoiling his daughter, whom he called the love of his life.
Friends and family recall that Jarnell brought energy and laughter to gatherings. He enjoyed basketball and video games, tried his hand at making music, liked to travel, and was competitive in wagering and friendly contests. In his youth he played football and was known for his strength and determination on the field. Those who knew him described him as compassionate, loyal, sociable, protective of loved ones, and quick with a joke—qualities that made him a cherished son, brother, father, and friend.
Jarnell is survived by his daughter, Kayiona Carter; his girlfriend, Sanaa Utley; his parents; a sister, JaQuoia Carter; brothers and extended family; and many friends who loved him. He was preceded in death by relatives who remain in the family’s memory. The family entrusted Osborne Funeral Home with arrangements and invited the community to honor his life at services held in late September 2021.
Though his time was far too short, Jarnell’s warmth, humor, and devotion to family left a lasting impression on those who knew him. He is remembered not for how he died but for the joy he shared, the care he gave, and the small everyday things that made him deeply beloved.
