Obituary

A formal remembrance

James Ryan “Ryan” McCandless (October 19, 1982 – August 2, 2011) is remembered for his steady dedication to service, his warmth toward friends and family, and his love of the outdoors. Born in Midland, Michigan, to James W. and Katherine A. (Kaweck) McCandless, Ryan grew up with a strong interest in law enforcement and community service. He was an Eagle Scout and a 2001 graduate of H. H. Dow High School, where he was a two-year letter winner in football and earned the Ironman Football Award three years running.

Ryan pursued criminal justice at Ferris State University, earning his bachelor’s degree in May 2005 with the support of a scholarship from the Michigan Sheriff’s Association. He later completed a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of South Dakota in 2009. Dedicated to helping others and sharing what he had learned, Ryan served as a professor at National American University while continuing his career in policing.

Friends and family remember him for quiet strengths—mentoring youth through DARE, enjoying hunting, fishing and trapping, and the easy way he connected with people from all walks of life. He treasured time with his parents and his fiancée, and his choices reflected a life shaped by service, humility, and steady courage.

On August 2, 2011, Ryan died in the line of duty in Rapid City, South Dakota. His loss was deeply felt by the communities he served and by his hometown in Midland, where he was laid to rest. In his memory, a scholarship was established to support high school graduates pursuing careers in law enforcement at Ferris State University and Western Dakota Technical Institute—an enduring tribute to his commitment to mentoring future public servants.

Ryan’s life was more than the final moment: he is remembered as a committed officer and teacher, an outdoorsman, an Eagle Scout, and a beloved son and fiancé. His family and friends continue to honor his legacy through remembrance and the scholarship that helps others follow the path he loved.
