Obituary

A formal remembrance

James Darrell "Darrell" McDaniel (March 25, 1970 – January 1, 2020) was a devoted son and sibling whose steady kindness left an impression on everyone who knew him. Born in Florence, Alabama, Darrell grew up in the Shoals area and graduated from Brooks High School in 1989. Those who loved him remembered him as laid back, well liked, and always ready to lend a hand.

Faith was a part of Darrell’s life from an early age; he accepted Christ at Northside Church of Christ in Center Star and carried those values of care and community into his everyday life. At the time of his passing he was employed in maintenance at Wendy’s in Muscle Shoals, where managers and coworkers recalled his hard work and dependable spirit.

Family was at the center of Darrell’s world. He was the sixth of eight children and is survived by his mother, Area McDaniel, sisters Sharon McDaniel, Sherry Stephens, Robin (Eric) Coffey, and Cassandra Gideon, and brothers Franklin (Nicole) McDaniel, Dennis McDaniel, and Derrick McDaniel, along with a wide circle of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is remembered for a generous nature — described by family as having a "very big heart" — and for being the kind of brother and friend who would help without hesitation.

Friends and family celebrated Darrell’s life at services held at Thompson & Son Funeral Home in Florence. In remembering him, those who knew him emphasize the quiet, everyday ways he showed love: steady work, kindness to coworkers, and an easygoing presence that made life lighter for people around him. While his life was cut far too short, his memory lives on in those small, enduring acts of care.

Darrell’s family invited the community to honor his memory through floral tributes or planting a memorial tree, and many paid respects during the public viewing and funeral services. He is missed deeply by his loved ones and by those in the Shoals community who benefited from his ready help and gentle nature.
