Remembering James

A life held close in memory

James Alfred White of Samson, Alabama, was 55 when he passed on March 10, 2009. A lifelong presence in Geneva County, Jim was known to many in Samson for his years of service as the city’s water superintendent before his retirement.

Born July 13, 1953, to Hubert and Virginia Ett Wise White, Jim’s life centered on family and community. He and his wife, Phyllis White, made their home in Samson; he is also remembered by his daughter Kay (Earl) Johnson of Samson, his son-in-law Murray Wise, and grandchildren Trey and Troy Johnson. Jim was preceded in death by several close family members and is fondly recalled by relatives and neighbors who knew him as a reliable, practical man who cared for those around him.

Family and friends gathered to honor Jim at First Baptist Church of Samson on March 17, 2009, with burial at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Pittman Funeral Home of Samson assisted the family with arrangements. In remembering Jim White, loved ones recall a life of steady work, quiet dedication to family, and the everyday kindnesses that bind a small community together.

Though his passing came amid a time of deep sorrow for the community, those who knew James Alfred White remember him for the ordinary, faithful life he lived: a husband, father, grandfather, and public servant whose presence mattered to Samson.

May the memory of James be a lasting source of comfort. A life matters far beyond what can ever be captured on a page, and this remembrance is offered with sympathy and respect.
