Obituary
A formal remembrance
Jaime Hicks Long, who cherished community, family, and the arts, passed away on April 8, 2023, in Morehead City. Born February 3, 1976, in Lexington, Kentucky, Jaime lived a life marked by service, curiosity, and a wholehearted commitment to the people around her.
A longtime human resources professional, Jaime brought more than two decades of HR experience to her role as Human Resources Director for Carteret County. Colleagues remember her as a tireless advocate for employees, a thoughtful leader who developed programs to help others grow, and the architect of a county leadership management training initiative whose first class graduated in March 2023. Her work reflected a deep belief that public service is strongest when people are supported and valued.
Beyond her professional life, Jaime loved the performing arts and was an active part of the Carteret Community Theatre, where she was affectionately known as a devoted theatre mom. She treasured time with her daughter, supporting dance and travel to competitions, and found joy in music, theater, and the small adventures of family life. Earlier years included athletic pursuits in high school, time abroad as a foreign exchange student in Brazil, and scholarship-supported study at Chapel Hill.
Jaime is remembered by family and friends for her spirited involvement in community life and her affectionate support of younger performers and colleagues. She is survived by her parents, James and Janet Hicks; her daughter, Georgia Ann Long; her sister Jessica Hicks Holland and family; and many friends and neighbors who valued her steady kindness and enthusiasm.
Services were conducted at Glad Tidings Church in Morehead City with family receiving friends the evening prior. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jaime’s memory were suggested for the Carteret Community Theatre — a fitting tribute to a woman whose life was entwined with community arts and the encouragement of others.
Those who knew Jaime recall a person who invested her energy in helping people flourish — through mentorship, civic leadership, and wholehearted presence at the events and performances that mattered most to her family and community. Her legacy lives on in the programs she built, the community she supported, and the loved ones who carry her memory forward.
