Remembering Ishma

A life held close in memory

Ishma Stewart was remembered as a bright, compassionate young woman with a fierce dedication to storytelling. A graduate of Oak Park and River Forest High School, she was studying journalism at Loyola University Chicago and hoped to use writing to illuminate social issues and give voice to her community. Peers and relatives recalled a young person who made friends easily, loved poetry, and pursued her ambitions with persistence.

Family and friends who gathered to celebrate Ishma’s life recalled her warmth and generous spirit. At the funeral service more than 200 people filled the chapel and adjoining spaces to honor her memory; speakers described her as someone who brought laughter to others and who cared deeply about improving the world through her words. Those who knew her spoke of a young journalist in the making — someone who read, wrote, and wanted to tell stories that mattered.

Ishma’s poetry and spoken-word work reflected a thoughtful awareness of community struggles and a desire to explore difficult realities with empathy. Her family has been active in keeping her memory alive through scholarship and community efforts that reflect her interests in education and the written word.

Though her life was cut short, Ishma’s commitment to storytelling and her kindness continue to be remembered by those who loved her. Her friends and family recall a young woman whose potential and gentle determination left a lasting impression, and whose memory inspires others to pursue compassion and purpose in their work and lives.
