Remembering Hunter
A life held close in memory
Hunter Dakota Reedy of Marion, Virginia, was a caring son, husband, and father who loved his family and served his community with steady dedication. Born December 19, 1995, in Abingdon, Hunter grew up in the Chilhowie area and graduated from Chilhowie High School in 2014. He pursued practical trade studies, completing CDL and electrical coursework, before discovering his calling in public service.
Hunter built a career in law enforcement and corrections that reflected his readiness to help others. He worked at the Southwest Regional Jail and later joined the Chilhowie Police Department before serving with the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office. Colleagues remember him for his willingness to step in where needed, his adventurous spirit, and the quiet loyalty he showed to his friends, family, and fellow first responders.
Family was central to Hunter’s life. He is lovingly remembered by his spouse and their three children, his parents, and an extended circle of relatives — including nieces and nephews who affectionately called him “Bubba.” He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Charles and Edna Reedy and his maternal grandmother Claudia McMahan. Hunter is also survived by grandparents‑in‑law Reece and Peggy Maloyed, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who treasured his company.
Funeral services honoring Hunter’s life were held at Chilhowie Christian Church with full police rites provided by the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office. Friends and family gathered to celebrate his warmth, service, and the everyday kindnesses that defined him. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorial contributions be made to the Hunter Reedy Memorial Fund at any Bank of Marion branch or to the South West Academy Training Foundation.
Hunter’s life was one of dedication to those he loved and to the community he served. He is remembered for his generous heart, his commitment to public service, and the comfort he brought to those around him. His family, friends, and the many who worked alongside him carry forward his memory with gratitude and respect.
