Obituary

A formal remembrance

Houston James Largo (July 28, 1989 – March 12, 2017) served his community with steady courage and a deep sense of duty. Born in Gallup, New Mexico, Houston was a member of the Áshiihi (Salt People) clan, born for Kiyaa’aanii (Towering House). He grew up in the region, attended Thoreau High School, and pursued further studies at the University of New Mexico.

Houston began a career in law enforcement that reflected his commitment to helping others. He served with the Gallup Police Department, where his work earned him recognition as City Officer of the Year in 2011. He later joined the Navajo Nation Police Department and continued to distinguish himself — receiving a Lifesaving Award and being honored as Indian Country Officer of the Year in 2016. Colleagues remembered him as a capable, reliable officer whose efforts made a real difference in the communities he patrolled.

Beyond badges and awards, Houston was part of family and community life on the Navajo Nation. His cultural roots and ties to family were an important part of who he was. Friends, fellow officers, and neighbors gathered to honor him after his passing; services were held in Rehoboth and he was laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park in Gallup.

Houston’s service and sacrifice touched many across the Four Corners region. Those who knew him recall a young man who answered the call to serve, who met difficult work with professionalism and care. His life is remembered for the tangible ways he sought to safeguard others and for the respect he earned from peers and community members. Though his loss was deeply felt, his dedication to duty and the compassion he showed in life remain lasting parts of his memory.
