Remembering Henry

A life held close in memory

Henry Ernesto Martinez (Jan. 17, 1988 – June 29, 2017) was a devoted father, passionate musician, and a presence who brightened rooms with an easy smile and a quick sense of humor. Born in Mount Vernon, New York, Henry later lived in Utica before moving to Florida where he worked to build a life for himself and his young family. Music was central to who he was: performing and recording under the name “Ya Boy H,” he released music including the 2016 project Bands Goin’ Up and created several music videos that connected with listeners.

Those who worked with Henry remember him as hardworking and encouraging. His collaborator Lafayette Cunningham described Henry as a dedicated father who posted frequently about his son and who found obvious joy in fatherhood. Family and friends say Henry treasured his role as a companion and parent, taking great pride in his relationship with his partner and their child.

Beyond the studio and stage, Henry is remembered for his warmth and generosity. Colleagues recalled that he was willing to help others and brought a positive outlook to collaborations and everyday moments alike. His music and the memories he made with loved ones remain part of his lasting influence.

Services to celebrate Henry’s life were held in July 2017 in Utica, New York. He is survived by his companion Taisha, their son Cassiel, his mother Madeline, siblings, and extended family who carry his memory forward. Though his life ended far too soon, Henry’s creative work and the love he shared with family and friends remain as a testament to the person he was — a father, musician, and friend whose presence mattered deeply to those who knew him.
