Obituary

A formal remembrance

Gilbert “Beto” Morado was born January 3, 1940, in Robstown, Texas, and passed from this life on June 14, 2023. A devoted husband to Margarita Ortiz since their marriage in 1964, Gilbert was a man whose hands and heart built a life for his family. The fourth of eight children, he spent his youth traveling with his migrant-working parents and later brought the lessons of hard work, resilience, and care into everything he did.

Gilbert was a resourceful craftsman who found joy in working with his hands—welding, groundskeeping, repairing, and building with whatever materials he could find. Despite having only a third-grade formal education, he opened Gilbert’s Tire Service in 1988 and ran the business successfully until 2002. Those who knew him remember a man who took pride in providing for his family and who taught those values to his children and grandchildren.

He loved to tell stories about his childhood travels across the United States and often spoke fondly of places he had seen. Gilbert enjoyed music, played the guitar, and delighted in the simple pleasures of coffee and pastries. Known for his good humor and penchant for jokes, he brought laughter to gatherings and warmth to everyday moments.

Gilbert is survived by his wife, Margarita; their two children; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rita Longoria Morado and Juan Morado, and a sister. Family remembered him as kind, forgiving, and loving—“the glue that held this family together”—and committed to passing on the work ethic and compassion he modeled.

Visitation and funeral services were arranged through Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock, with family and friends gathering to celebrate a life shaped by devotion to family, steady labor, and the small joys that marked his days. Gilbert’s memory endures in the stories, work, and love he left to those closest to him.
