Obituary

A formal remembrance

George Claude Gaudin of New Orleans passed away April 25, 2018, at the age of 69. Born January 26, 1949, to Dorothy May and George Francis Gaudin, George grew up in the Lakeview neighborhood and attended St. Dominic’s, Warren Easton High School, Murphy High School in Alabama, and Delgado Community College.

A devoted family man, George married Gaynell Williams in 1971 after meeting her on a blind date; their marriage endured for 46 years. He was a proud father to his daughter Wendy Monique Gaudin Gremillion and son Chad Edward Gaudin, and treasured his grandchildren Adelyn Sadie, Braxton Cale, Gunnar Gator, and Gannon Gator, who affectionately called him “Grampy.” Family and friends remember him as warm, proud of his children’s accomplishments, and playful with a mischievous, larger-than-life presence.

George spent 39 years in the insurance business with National Life and Allstate, where his organized work ethic and dedication to clients were well known. He loved adventure and speed — from baseball in his youth, where he played catcher, to motorcycles, speed boats, airboats, and classic cars and hot rods. He was an enthusiastic participant in New Orleans’ Mardi Gras tradition, a riding lieutenant with the Krewe of Bacchus and a member of the Krewe of Centurions.

In recent years George suffered from a debilitating, undiagnosed physical pain that deeply affected his quality of life. Facing unbearable suffering, his family has asked for compassion and understanding for his decision to end his life. They have expressed deep grief and gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends and the community.

A funeral service was held at the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on April 30, 2018, with interment at Lake Lawn Park and Mausoleum. Those who knew him recall George as a loving husband and father, a proud supporter of his children’s endeavors, and a man who carried a generous, joyful spirit — the kind of presence that left lasting memories for friends and family. His family asks that remembrances honor the fullness of his life and the love he held for those closest to him.
