Obituary

A formal remembrance

Gene B. Hammond Jr. (September 25, 1989 – September 11, 2009) is remembered as a young man who filled rooms with energy, friendship and a generous spirit. A cherished son of Gene Hammond Sr. and Rochelle Dabney, Gene was treasured by a large circle of family — five sisters, three brothers, and many aunts, uncles and cousins — and by his fiancée, Andrea Evans.

Friends and family recall Gene for his warm personality and natural ability to bring people together. Messages left on his memorial describe him as funny, kind, and an exceptional dancer who inspired confidence in others; younger dancers looked up to him and he helped them find their footing on stage. Classmates remembered his genuine nature and curiosity in school. Those who worked with him spoke of his friendly demeanor and easy smile.

The family invited friends and loved ones to honor Gene’s life at a funeral service held at Roeder Mortuary in Omaha, with interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery. In the weeks and months after his passing, dozens of friends and relatives shared memories of laughter, dance, and the small everyday kindnesses that made him unique — the kind of recollections that underline how deeply he was loved.

Though his life was brief, Gene’s presence left a lasting impression on those who knew him. His family’s grief is met by many expressions of sympathy from the community, remembering a young man whose warmth and talents continue to live on in their memories. He is held in the hearts of his family, his fiancée, and the many friends who felt fortunate to know him.
