Remembering Franquita

A life held close in memory

Franquita Cunningham was a 49-year-old woman from Birmingham, Alabama, whose life was part of the everyday fabric of her community. Known in public records only in limited detail, she spent her days among neighbors, family, and friends in Birmingham — ordinary relationships and moments that made up the life she led.

On October 31, 2014, while visiting a home on the 100 block of 5th Avenue Southwest, Franquita was struck by a bullet that entered the residence from outside. She was rushed to UAB Hospital for emergency care and underwent surgery. For weeks her family and friends held onto hope as she received treatment, but the injuries proved catastrophic and she died on October 31, 2014. The circumstances described in public notices indicate the gunfire originated outside the residence and that the wound was the result of a stray round. Public updates at the time did not identify an arrest or someone publicly charged in connection with the shooting.

Public records and news-aggregation listings are sparse about other personal details such as occupation, broader family relationships, or a full birth date. That scarcity in the public record does not diminish the fact that Franquita was a real person whose life mattered to people who knew her. This remembrance honors her as an individual whose everyday presence — visits to friends’ homes, quiet evenings watching television, and the relationships she kept — were the true measure of her life.

Those who knew Franquita and those touched by her passing are remembered here with respect. While public documentation focuses on the tragic circumstances of her final days, this page is dedicated first to acknowledging the person she was and the quiet significance of a life lived among family and community.
