Obituary
A formal remembrance
Floris C. Lewis of Lewistown, born July 26, 1933, in McVeytown, is remembered for a life shaped by faith, neighborhood ties, and gentle service to others. A daughter of James and Catherine (Sweigart) Kenepp, Floris made her home in the local community for many years and was known to friends and neighbors for her calm, steady presence.
Floris worked as a secretary at the Sentinel and also served in the Triple “A” office in Lewistown, where she was respected for her professionalism and helpful nature. She was a devoted member of Spring Run Church of the Brethren, taking part in the Shining Star Sunday school class and serving on church committees that mattered to her heart. Music and community were part of her life — she played with a harmonica band and volunteered at the train station, giving her time to causes and places that connected people.
Outside of work and church, Floris enjoyed simple pleasures and family traditions. She liked camping along the river and treasured an annual family vacation to Fripp Island, South Carolina — times she looked forward to and remembered fondly.
Floris was married to George M. Lewis on July 18, 1970; she was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Galen and Marlin Kenepp. She is survived by nieces and nephews who carry forward the memory of her warmth.
A funeral service was held on July 20, 2015, at Spring Run Church of the Brethren in McVeytown, with interment in the church cemetery. The family invited memorial contributions to Spring Run Church of the Brethren in lieu of flowers. Arrangements were entrusted to Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes.
Floris’s life was made up of everyday acts — tending relationships, helping where she could, and keeping the traditions that mattered to her. Those who knew her remember a dependable neighbor and a faithful church member whose quiet generosity enriched the community.
