Remembering Fahness

A life held close in memory

Fahness Lutalo dedicated much of his life to the disciplines of boxing and mixed martial arts, becoming a coach and the owner of OC Boxing & MMA Academy in Tustin, California. Known locally as a hands-on trainer, he taught students of varying ages and backgrounds, helping many develop athletic skill, confidence, and discipline. Colleagues and former students remembered Lutalo as a committed coach whose gym was both a workplace and a neighborhood gathering place.

By all public accounts, Lutalo built his gym from the ground up and took pride in creating one of the few Black-owned combat-sports businesses in Orange County. His work as a trainer and gym owner made him a familiar figure in the local martial-arts community; event listings, gym profiles, and first-hand posts by students refer to him as “Coach Fahness” and praise his practical knowledge of boxing and Muay Thai. Reviews and community posts describe a coach who trained seriously and supported people learning to fight better—and to carry themselves with greater self-respect.

Public records indicate Fahness Lutalo was born August 1, 1971, and passed away on March 24, 2016. He was laid to rest at Santa Ana Cemetery in early April 2016. In the months after his death, local coverage and remembrances reflected both sorrow and recognition of his role in the community: people who trained with him spoke about the standards he set in the gym, the opportunities he provided, and the positive influence he had on students’ lives.

Though details about Lutalo’s private life are limited in the public record, what emerges is a portrait of a person who invested energy into teaching and running a small business rooted in his community. That investment—coaching, building a gym, and helping others improve—remains a tangible part of his legacy. For those who found direction, fitness, or friendship at OC Boxing & MMA Academy, Fahness Lutalo is remembered for his dedication to the craft of fighting and for the space he created where others could learn and grow.
