Remembering Donald

A life held close in memory

Donald “Donnie” McMurry Ouzts (June 2, 1940 – December 8, 2003) was a devoted husband, a public servant, and a familiar presence in Abbeville County. Born and raised in Abbeville County, Donnie built a life rooted in community, faith, and service. He was a longtime member of Rice Memorial Baptist Church in Greenwood and belonged to The Clinton Lodge 3 AFM, where fellowship and fraternal bonds were important parts of his life.

Donnie served his community for many years in law enforcement, including time as a deputy with the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Department and later as a constable with the Abbeville County Magistrate’s Office. Those who knew him remembered him by his steady manner and his commitment to duty. Outside of public service, he worked as a mason, a trade that reflected his practical skills and work ethic.

Family was central to Donnie’s life. He was married to Jean Scott Ouzts for many years and was the son of the late Maurice William and Lucille Thompson Ouzts. He is survived by his widow, Jean; sons Kevin and Chris Ouzts of Abbeville; brothers William R. “Tommy” Wilson and Maurice “Jimmy” Ouzts Jr.; two grandsons; and a great-grandson. Those who gathered to honor him described a man who took pride in his family and in the ordinary acts of care that knit a life together.

A graveside service was held at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, where friends and family gathered to remember Donnie’s life and service. Memorials were suggested to be made to a charity of one’s choice. Though his passing was sudden and mourned by many, Donnie Ouzts is remembered for his steady presence, his service to his neighbors, and the quiet commitments of a life lived among family and community.
