Remembering Dighton

A life held close in memory

Dighton Lewis Little, 35, served his San Joaquin County community with quiet strength, energy, and a deep commitment to others. A member of the Sheriff’s Office since 1979, Dighton was an original member of the department’s tactical team and brought professionalism and courage to each assignment. In addition to his duties within custody, patrol, and the Detective Division — where he worked on burglary, child-abuse, and robbery/homicide matters — Dighton was known in the community for his volunteer spirit.

Outside of his law-enforcement work, Dighton gave his time to youth through Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Joaquin County, taking an active interest in mentoring a young boy whose fond memories of picnics and an autographed baseball testify to the quiet, generous ways he connected with others. He also supported local community traditions, including the annual charity football event known as the “Bacon Bash.” Those who served with him remembered him as energetic and larger-than-life in personality, someone who worked hard and enjoyed life.

Dighton’s service and sacrifice were recognized by colleagues and the community alike. His funeral drew a moving procession, and he was laid to rest at San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery in Stockton. He is remembered by fellow deputies and friends for his dedication to duty, his involvement in community programs, and the personal kindnesses he extended to those he mentored.

Though his life was cut short, Dighton Little’s legacy endures in the programs he supported and the people he touched. A patrol briefing room at the sheriff’s headquarters bears a plaque in his honor, a reminder of the commitment he brought to public service and the high regard in which he was held by his peers.
