Devonn Dozell Mayhew

Devonn Dozell Mayhew (born May 15, 1999) was a young man of Copperas Cove, Texas, whose quick smile and quiet warmth drew people to him. A 2019 graduate of Crossroads High School, Devonn was described by family as both shy and kind — the sort of person who could light up a room with a grin. He enjoyed music and dancing, and he liked to draw, especially graffiti-style art. Devonn had creative ambitions: he hoped to study graphic design and also had an interest in mechanics.

Family was central to Devonn’s life. He is remembered by parents Blaind Mayhew and Natasha Groce, his siblings, grandparents, and a wide circle of aunts, uncles and friends who treasured his gentle presence. Those who knew him recall his readiness to be there for others and the easy way he connected with friends during music and hangouts.

On the night of July 23, 2020, Devonn’s life ended suddenly and tragically. The community and his family sought answers in the days that followed; law enforcement released images and requested assistance from the public. Those facts are part of the public record, but they do not define the fullness of Devonn’s life. He is remembered for his creativity, his plans for the future, and the everyday kindness he showed to family and friends.

Though his time was short, Devonn left an impression on those around him — a young man with artistic hopes, a love of music and dance, and a devotion to family. His memory endures in the stories shared by loved ones and in the small gestures that made him who he was: a caring son, brother and friend whose life mattered deeply to those who loved him.
