Remembering Derrick

A life held close in memory

Derrick Alexander Lindsay, 38, of Hampton, Virginia, passed away on May 19, 2024. A loving father and companion, Derrick was deeply cherished by his family and many friends. He is remembered by his companion, Briana Matthews, and his three sons, Darion Lindsay, Damarri Chandler, and Davion Lindsay, who were central to his life and to whom he gave his steady care and devotion.

Born June 24, 1985, at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Derrick grew up in the Hampton Roads area surrounded by family. He is survived by his parents and a close-knit group of siblings, including Terrance Lindsay, Sheronda Lindsay, John Peden, Najwa Benthall, and Nala Benthall, as well as a wide circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who treasured him.

Professionally, Derrick was a licensed welder who brought skill and commitment to his work at Smithfield Foods. His dedication and leadership were recognized by supervisors and colleagues alike; he pursued training opportunities and was respected for his integrity, work ethic, and willingness to help others learn and succeed.

Those who knew Derrick remember him for his reliability and the steady presence he offered his family and friends. He valued the bonds of family, took pride in his work, and found meaning in the everyday rhythms of life with those he loved. While details of his passing have been reported publicly, the memory that endures is of a man who worked hard, cared for his children, and was loved by many.

A private memorial service will be held to honor Derrick’s life. The family has entrusted O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home with arrangements and appreciates the expressions of sympathy from the community. Derrick’s life — his care for his sons, his commitment to his craft, and the relationships he nurtured — remain the truest measure of his time with us.
