Remembering Derick
A life held close in memory
Derick Cartell Askins was a devoted son and father whose life was rooted in family and community. Born August 14, 1983, Derick was known to those closest to him for his steady presence and the importance he placed on family gatherings. He was a beloved son of Virginia Askins-Mosby and Andre Moton, and he took great pride in his role as a father to his son, Corderius.
Derick’s circle extended across Plaquemine and Baton Rouge, where relatives and friends remember him for his connection to siblings, cousins, and a wide network of family who shared holidays, stories, and time together. Services entrusted to Roscoe Mortuary honored his life with visitations and a religious service at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, reflecting the place his family and community held for faith and fellowship.
Those who survive Derick include his son; his mother and father; step-parents; sisters D’Joundia, Courtney, and Erica; several brothers; and an extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews who drew strength from one another. The gatherings and memorials that followed his passing underscored how much his family meant to him and how deeply he was loved in return.
Though his life ended too soon on Thanksgiving evening, Derick’s memory endures in the relationships he nurtured and the daily moments he shared with family. He is remembered not by the manner of his passing but by the ties he built—by the son who loved his mother, by the father who cared for his child, and by a brother and friend who belonged to a close-knit community. In remembering Derick Cartell Askins, family and friends honor those ties and the quiet, human ways he mattered to those around him.
