Derek Brown

Derek Dashaun Brown (January 30, 1999 – February 18, 2026) was known for an infectious smile and a generous spirit that brightened the lives of those around him. Born in Savannah, Georgia, and proud of his Panamanian roots, Derek made San Antonio his home, where his love of music and basketball connected him to family and friends. He was the youngest of six siblings and often found joy in simple moments: shooting hoops, sharing a laugh while playing video games, or offering encouragement to a coworker during a long shift.

For about a year Derek worked at a local hospital, where those who knew him remembered him as a positive presence who could lift others’ spirits. Family members describe him as warm, playful, and faithful — a young man whose faith and love of community were evident in the way he treated people. He is survived by his parents, Dwayne Brown Sr. and Violeta Jackman, and his siblings Delcia, Jonathan, Dwayne Jr., Joseph, Andres, and Stephanye, along with many friends who felt like family.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate Derek’s life with music, prayer and basketball — the very things he loved. They wore black and blue in his memory and shared stories of the laughter and light he brought into everyday moments. Those who knew him recall a gentle, adventurous soul who lifted others simply by being himself.

Derek’s life was cut tragically short on February 18, 2026. While that loss is part of the public record, his family asks that remembrances focus on who he was in life: a beloved son and brother, a friend who showed up with a smile, and a presence that brought people together. His memory endures in the music he loved, the games he played, and the kindness he shared.
