Obituary
A formal remembrance
Deontae Dquan Bessie (January 3, 2004 — January 11, 2024) is remembered for the love he carried for his family and for the small, everyday ways he brightened the lives around him. A native of Gretna and a resident of New Orleans, Deontae worked for a time at Amazon and found deep meaning in his role as a father to his daughter, Demi. To those who knew him, he was a loving son, brother, grandson, and uncle who kept family close and valued the company of relatives and friends.
He was the beloved son of Dquaii Bessie and Deontae Dorsey and the cherished grandson of Quinston and Lori Calvin, Yolanda Dorsey, Carl, Sr., and Tammy Shief. He grew up surrounded by a large extended family and is remembered by siblings Corey, Shaquille, Messiah, Kewanna, Keaunta, and Keshata, and by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who survive him. Deontae’s companion, Kayshawn Causey, and his daughter remain at the center of the family’s love for him.
Family and community gathered to honor his life at Fischer Community Church in New Orleans on January 26, 2024. The service reflected the close bonds he kept with those who loved him and the church community that supported his family. Interment was private.
Though his life was cut short, Deontae’s role as a young father and a devoted family member is the legacy those who loved him hold most dearly. He is remembered with gratitude for the moments of care and connection he shared. Friends and loved ones continue to celebrate his memory and the place he held in their lives.
