In loving memory of
Deon Gilbert
November 7, 2014
Deon Gilbert was a bright 15-year-old sophomore who loved football, school, and dreamed of attending Texas A&M to study architecture — a promising life cut far too short.
Remembering Deon
A life held close in memory
Deon Gilbert was a caring son and the youngest of four siblings whose life was centered on school, sport, and family. A sophomore at Butler College Prep on Chicago’s Far South Side, Deon was known to his mother and community as a strong student who regularly earned A’s and B’s. He played on his high school football team and harbored clear ambitions for the future — he hoped to attend Texas A&M and become an architect.
Family and faith were important parts of Deon’s daily life. His mother, Ida Hall, described him as a serious student with goals and a quiet determination to pursue college. He attended church regularly and was connected to his neighborhood and school communities; teachers, pastors, and teammates were among those who went to the hospital when he was taken there after being wounded.
On November 7, 2014, Deon was fatally shot on the Far South Side of Chicago and later died at Comer Children’s Hospital. While the circumstances of his death were reported in local news, Deon’s life was more than that single night. He was a young person with academic promise, athletic interests, and plans for higher education — details that speak to the potential he carried and the future his family had hoped for.
Though public records about Deon focus largely on the tragedy of his death, those who knew him remember a student with goals and a family who loved him. This remembrance honors the person he was: a hardworking teenager with dreams, an active role in his school and church, and a place in the hearts of his family and community whose loss was deeply felt.
