Remembering David

A life held close in memory

David Thomas transformed hardship into service. Born March 10, 1960, he found a new life at the Los Angeles Mission and became the heart of its kitchen, serving his community with steady hands and a joyful spirit for more than two decades. Joining the Mission staff in June 2000, David rose to lead Food Services, mentoring colleagues and overseeing meals that sustained people in their hardest moments. Colleagues remember him as a warm and fun-loving presence who often led a prayer circle and was quick with a hearty “Hallelujah.”

Under his guidance the Mission’s kitchen became more than a place to prepare food — it was a refuge where dignity and care were part of every meal. During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic he and his team adapted to serve thousands of Thanksgiving meals, working alongside visiting chefs and volunteers to ensure neighbors did not go hungry. Longtime friends and collaborators, including visiting chefs who cooked beside him, credited David with helping feed millions over his years of service.

David’s leadership extended beyond daily meals; he was a mentor who trained others in the craft and compassion of feeding people in need. Those who worked with him describe a man who remembered where he came from and used that experience to lift others, offering practical skills, steady leadership, and encouragement.

A memorial service held at the Los Angeles Mission’s Holsinger Chapel on April 30, 2021, brought together friends and co-workers to celebrate his life, faith, and the countless ways he cared for others. In honoring David, the Mission and his community emphasized the life he built — one defined by service, faith, and the simple, profound act of sharing a meal.

David’s life is a reminder that ordinary acts of care can leave an extraordinary legacy. He is remembered for his faith, his warm leadership in the kitchen, and the compassion he brought to feeding those in need. The Mission and many who knew him continue to carry forward the work and spirit he helped shape.
