Remembering David

A life held close in memory

David “Dave” Richard Erickson (November 19, 1959 – August 31, 2021) was a dependable friend, proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and a skilled diesel mechanic who took pride in solving problems and helping others. Born in Aurora, Illinois, and raised in Yorkville, Dave carried a Midwestern work ethic throughout his life and into his long career in Southern California.

After serving his country and being honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal, Dave built a life centered on honest work and practical skill. He worked as a diesel mechanic for Estes Express Lines in La Mirada, where colleagues knew him as the person to call when a tough mechanical problem needed steady hands and clear thinking. He enjoyed the challenges of mechanics and the satisfaction of getting people safely back on the road.

Family meant everything to Dave. He delighted in spoiling his grandchildren and took joy in small moments with his daughter, Shelly Loewen, and the wider family that included siblings and his parents, David and Luanne. Playful and generous, he often joked about his hopeful scratcher-ticket dreams, but more than luck, he cherished the chance to bless others and lend a hand.

Dave’s friends remember a man with an infectious laugh who was always willing to help, whether that meant working on a vehicle or sharing practical advice. Those who knew him recall his warmth, readiness to support others, and the quiet pride he took in his craftsmanship.

David Erickson will be remembered for his service, his skill, and the love he showed his family. His life touched many — as a veteran, a devoted father and grandfather, a trusted mechanic, and a friend who showed up when he was needed. He will be missed and fondly remembered by those who were fortunate to know him.
