A formal remembrance

Darryl McKinney, 19, of Gary, Indiana, is remembered for the kindness and courage that marked his young life. Family and friends recall a warm-spirited young man who stood ready to help others and who earned the respect of his community.

Darryl’s life touched people beyond his neighborhood. He was recognized for an act of bravery that brought him community praise and an award from the American Red Cross of Northwest Indiana — a testament to his readiness to put others’ safety before his own. He attended local schools and was known to classmates and neighbors as someone who cared about the people around him.

Loved ones held a service to celebrate Darryl’s life on May 2, 2009, at Friendship Baptist Church in Brighton, with burial at Patterson-Forest Grove Cemetery. Those ceremonies brought family and friends together to honor his memory, share stories, and support one another through profound loss.

While Darryl’s life was cut short on April 21, 2009, the kindness he showed and the courage he demonstrated remain with those who knew him. His family, friends, and community continue to remember a young man whose actions reflected compassion and bravery. May his memory be a comfort to those who loved him and an example of care and courage for others.
