Remembering Darin
A life held close in memory
Darin William Hobdy was born on September 18, 2003, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From a young age he shared his gifts with family and community — balancing academic promise with a love of sports, creative expression, and church life. Darin played youth basketball in local leagues, including Ozanam and Basketball Stars of America, and showed an early flair for performance when he took part in ballroom-dancing competitions while at Sunnyside Elementary. He was also an honor roll student in elementary school and later renewed his focus on academics during high school.
Darin’s curiosity and wide-ranging interests set him apart. He loved learning about history and cultures, developing a particular fascination with ancient Egypt and hieroglyphics. That same intellectual energy led him to thoughtful conversations about law and justice with a family member who practiced criminal defense; those conversations grew into a real opportunity when he completed a summer internship in 2020, reviewing reports and discussing legal strategies alongside his uncle.
Active in his church’s youth programs, Darin participated in the youth mime ministry, read scripture in Sunday School, and sang in prayer circles. He also expressed himself through music and video projects, making short videos that reflected his thoughts on current events. Through all of these pursuits he showed a thoughtful, engaged spirit and a willingness to explore different ways of learning and performing.
Darin is remembered by his parents, siblings, grandparents, and a wide circle of relatives and friends who celebrated his intelligence, creativity, and devotion to family and faith. Services to honor his life were held in early June 2021 at Baptist Temple in Pittsburgh. Though his life was far too brief, those who loved him recall a young man whose curiosity, talents, and warmth left a meaningful impression on his community. May his memory be a blessing to those who knew and loved him.
