Remembering Danzell
A life held close in memory
Danzell Lamont Gholson (d. January 23, 2018) is remembered as a caring father, loyal son, and a young man who valued family and friends. A native of Hopewell, Virginia, Danzell attended both the Hopewell and Prince George public school systems and was known locally for his warm presence and easygoing company. He worked at a local McDonald’s and took pride in providing for his loved ones. Most of all, Danzell loved being a father. He is lovingly survived by his three daughters—Amaria Dnae Littlejohn-Gholson, Monica Nicole Purtee, and Avaia Iyana Gholson—who were the center of his life.
Danzell’s ties to family were deep. He was the son of Simona (Cricket) Gholson and Dwayne Henry, and he is also remembered by his biological father, Kevin McDougal. He is survived by siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a wide circle of friends who recall his fondness for spending time with people he cared about. Those close to him remember occasions when he attended Fountain of Life Outreach Church, and family accounts note that on one such visit he accepted faith in a meaningful way.
Friends and relatives recall Danzell as someone who loved the simple, important parts of life—family gatherings, laughter with friends, and moments spent with his children. While his life was cut far too short, the love he gave to his daughters and the connections he made in his community endure. Services to honor his life were held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with interment at Mt. Sinai Community Cemetery in Prince George, Virginia.
Danzell’s name lives on through his children and the many relatives and friends who carry memories of his kindness. His family has asked that remembrances shared about him remain uplifting and respectful as they continue to grieve and celebrate the life he lived.
